It’s okay to fall and it’s ok to fail!

‘When life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade. Throw them back and grab a protein shake instead!’

Life can sometimes get in the way of your training or you may make mistakes in the gym whilst training. Brush off the mistakes and any negative thoughts and jump right back in. No one is perfect and we all make mistakes, even seasoned gym-goers who present an outward look of living in a gym.

Over time, technique can be improved on and the frequency of mistakes will decrease. If you’re new to the gym and the gym environment, there may be a temptation to go hard and fast. Going in guns blazing hard and fast could lead to more mistakes being made and injuring yourself in the process.

Once you’ve got the basics down the rest should follow and you shouldn’t be afraid to ask for help. Asking for feedback could prove very beneficial to your training. Common sense dictates that you should ask for feedback from someone who is professionally trained instead of someone that could potentially teach you bad habits or bad practice.

If you want to push yourself in weight training you could always ask for a spotter to help support you. Once you have an awareness of what you’re doing and how spotting works you could always return the favour and spot for someone else if asked. Do not be afraid to ask for a spotter. If you are nervous or apprehensive gym goer try not to let this stop you from asking someone. If you are curious about spotting then it would be worth researching it first so you are clear about the benefits of having one whilst you train.

One common fear is the idea that everyone is watching you and that if you fall or fail they will be watching and judging or even worse still, laughing! A good friend once told me that the people around you are probably not interested in what you’re doing in the slightest as they are focusing on their own training and their own goals. Chances are, the people around you are just as conscious about making mistakes in their training as you are.

Try to remember that you can’t let fear get in the way. If you fail or fall, dust yourself off and get back up again. Pain can be temporary but what defines us is how well we rise after falling!

My First Blog Post……. Here Goes!!

Why Keep a Fitness Blog in the First Place?

This is the first post on my new blog. I am writing this as a way of reflection on my fitness goals and my fitness experiences over the last few years. I also look to reflect and review current goals and progress. I hope it will motivate me in the long run and inspire me to keep going. I am keen to support people where I hope in some way it can help or motivate anyone who is reading it.

My life motto is ‘An Open World Begins With An Open Mind’ which on reflection can have many different meanings. For me it means, keep your mind open and listen to people, support people to the best of your ability and hear their stories and experiences.

My story reflects on my own fitness journey since starting training at the gym alongside external factors that have effected my health, well-being or motivation along the way. These external factors range from family life, social life, illness, injury and other events that have had a significant impact.

I have been supported by so many great people along the way, friends, family, personal trainers and members of staff at various gyms and fitness centres.

I am not a professional or trained expert in the field of exercise or fitness and don’t pretend to be either! What I am writing is opinion and what may be beneficial to me may not be beneficial to someone else. Everyone is different and everyone is unique in their own way.

If someone is inspired, motivated or interested in my writing then it will have made this even more worthwhile and, as always, I wish for the best for people and to see the best in people.

Getting Into a Routine

‘Getting into a new routine can be tough but it’s worth it!’

Getting into a new routine can be tough particularly if your normal routine is revolving around work.

When training in a gym that provides fitness classes and fitness timetables you may find it a motivational tool to sign up to said classes or follow a class timetable. For many people, attending classes after a work shift is a great way to help wind down after a long day at work, for others, it is something to look forward to at the end of the day. You don’t even need to sign up to a class by yourself, you can sign up with friends and train together in the class. Training together friends can also be a great motivator if you find that training together with people you know helps push you.

If you can set aside just thirty minutes a day into your schedule to train in the gym, at home or whilst out then it’s better than doing nothing and going with the flow. For me in my experience, I liked to book onto multiple classes, sometimes one after the other time permitting, so that I could be more productive in the gym. Taking part in classes back to back can be very tiring so it would be best to throw caution into the wind so that you are not pushing yourself too hard. Pushing yourself too hard could lead to major fatigue or even worse, it could lead to an injury.

Injuries in the gym are common for a number of reasons. I have experienced injury, falling over and all sorts during my time in the gym. A mistake that I did not learn from at the time is that I carried an injury with me for over a year before getting surgery to rectify the issue. I look to go into more detail about said injury in an upcoming post but for now, the moral of the story is, train hard but also train smart! For me, I was training hard but not particularly being very smart about it!

‘An Open World Begins With An Open Mind’

The introduction is always the hardest thing to write but I had always loved the above quote when I first saw it in a advert. Sometimes it is far too easy to close your mind off and not be open to the ideas and opinions of those around you regardless of whether you agree with them or not.

I currently work in a student supporting role in a University for a day job but have taken an interest in the fitness world and how it can change peoples lives for the better. I don’t pretend to be an expert or a fountain of knowledge on the fitness world but I try my best to understand it.

This is a working progress and hope to engage with a range of topics surrounding health and fitness. Alongside this, I also look to provide some of my own workout plans.

I hope that you find this fitness blog of interest and I am open to any feedback or comments.

Thanks for visiting!
